Biography

Chris Terry started taking photographs more than 20 years ago, having first picked up a camera when working as an assistant land surveyor and discovering that he loved the interplay of light on whichever building site he was shooting. He went on to assist photographers such as David Bailey, Tony McGee, and Anthony Crickmay, and diversified into food-based commissions after developing long term working relationships with several high-profile chefs. His pictures, he says, are always a collaboration, whether with food or people. “I talk to my subjects - because we’re making the picture together,” he says of his luminous, joy-filled portraits. “Even food doesn’t exist without the people who’ve grown it or made it or produced it.”

Chris is an avid collector of photography himself: an aficionado of artists that range from the war photographer James Nachtwey to reportage by Brent Stirton, and believes that there’s no excuse in life for poor photography, and that even a simple portrait should make the sitter look fantastic.

He now photographs people, food and places, working for clients as diverse as AEG, Caprice Holdings, Danone, House & Garden, Jamie Oliver, Nestle, Nike, Intercontinental, Sainsbury’s, and Standard Chartered. He has also shot for numerous publishers, including Bloomsbury (Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saison), Kyle Books (Caldesi’s), Octopus (Death By Burrito, Oklava) Penguin (Jamie Oliver, Lindsay Bareham, Tim Hayward), Quercus (Allegra McEverdy, Matt Tebbutt),
Quadrille (Richard Burr, Valentine Warner), Simon & Schuster (Lisa Faulkner) and Random House (GBBO, Nadiya Hussain, Nieves Barrigan).
