Biography

Jonathan Gregson has always wanted to be a photographer, ever since as a child, he took his first photograph of the village postbox and was blown away by the way in which the shadows registered on the images as clearly as the postbox itself. Since then, he has created similarly arresting, graphic images of food, still life, and travel, in work that spans advertising, branding, packaging, books and editorial.

“I’m always looking for the moment,” he says of his striking photographs, - whether that’s a drip of maple syrup just about to fall from a stack of pancakes or the splash of an ice cube into a freshly-made cocktail. “I want to distill an image down to its most succinct form” The resulting photographs are deceptively simple, but full of detail, life and drama.

He has worked with brands as varied as Flora, Harrods, Havana Club, Lurpak, Marks & Spencer, McCains, McDonalds, Milka, Subway, Taylor’s Coffee, Tesco, Waitrose and Yorkshire Tea. His work has also featured in editorial titles including The Guardian, House & Garden, Lonely Planet, Waitrose Food and the Sunday Times. Other editorial work includes numerous books with chefs and brands, including Anjum Anand, Cairo Kitchen, Marcus Wareing, the River Cafe and Shipton Mill. In 2018 he was awarded a Fellowship of the British Institute of Professional Photography.

Like his pictures, Gregson says he doesn’t want to stand still: his next iteration is in moving image and direction.
